Temporal Currents
My work explores the concept of time, continuously interwoven within an eternal cycle of permanence and impermanence. This perspective emerges from having past moments frequently resurfacing, intertwining with the present, and shaping my perception and experience of the current moment. This has prompted a deeper reflection on my understanding of time, as seen through the analogue process. When the photographic paper is left unfixed, it gradually transforms under exposure to light until it reaches a state of balance. The passage of time appears to be embodied on the paper itself—each moment of coming and going may seem isolated, but is actually interconnected through a causal chain to the moments before and after. These connections are what form time’s eternal cycle. As we exist within this cycle, we are not merely witnesses to the passage of time but are inevitably part of its flow.
This installation was exhibited in a dark space illuminated only by darkroom safety lights. Seven unfixed photographs and
one fixed photograph were mounted on black wooden panels, suspended from the ceiling, arranged in a circle that places the
viewer at the center of the space. All eight photographs are enlargements from the same negative. Above each piece of
photographic paper hangs a small lamp, controlled by a timer plug that lights up at specific intervals to illuminate the paper.
Since seven of the photographic papers were not fixed, their colors continuously change under repeated exposure to the
light; the one fixed photograph, by contrast, remains unchanged. Through special processes, the colors of these eight
photographic papers present a gradient effect, shifting from light to dark and then from dark to light under illumination.
When viewers step inside the circle, it feels as if they are entering another dimension of time. In this dimension, time is an
endless cycle, and the rhythm of the lights turning on and off symbolizes the flow of time. Viewers stand at the center of
time, witnessing every moment of change and the intricate connections between them, while also inevitably becoming part
of the passage of time.
